First National Bank (FNB) and PayPal today announced a new competition to award developers who create innovative applications using PayPal’s payment platform.
The local winner of the FNB and PayPal X Award will receive a trip to the United States to attend PayPal’s second annual Innovate Conference, which is taking place 26 and 27 October. The prize will include airfare, accommodation, meals, conference costs, visa expenses and insurance to an approximate value of $10,000. In addition, developers will also be automatically entered into PayPal’s X Developer Challenge and could receive an award totalling up to $100,000 in prizes.
This year’s PayPal X Innovate 2010 conference will be held at Moscone West in San Francisco. The conference will feature presentations from industry experts, new product announcements and sessions that will give developers the tools and support they need to create the future of payments.

As a South African web publisher who makes money from Google AdSense and an FNB account holder I was quite excited around PayPal coming to South Africa. I was hoping that it would mean that my AdSense earnings could be transferred into a PayPal account which could then be moved into my FNB account.
Alas it appears that this can’t be done. I really HATE dealing with the forex desk each month to deposit my AdSense cheques and I’m now paying R190 for secure delivery of the cheque which seems a little excessive.
Anybody know if PayPal accounts are being used for AdSense earnings internationally?

There is lots of excitement on Twitter – apparently PayPal is coming to South Africa and this is likely to be a very influential development for small business in South Africa.
PayPal is a product which allows for secure transacting online without having to hand out your credit card or bank account details.
This has obvious benefits for South Africans looking to establish online businesses. If customers know that they can interact securely then more and more people are likely to look at online transacting.
This is good news! Will post more details when I find out more of them.
